In addition to monthly dance parties, Oakland is also home to established and beloved queer bars and nightclubs, such as Club BNB (formerly Bench and Bar), and Club 21, both in the Uptown neighborhood. Started by a judge and attorney, Club BNB has been around for 35 years and is the largest gay and lesbian nightclub in the Bay Area. It’s especially welcoming to people of color. The club’s main dance floor features hip-hop, old academy, R&B and house, plus go-go dancers, drink specials and drag shows for the fabulously inclined.

A Bit of Oakland History

The area that is present-day Oakland was initially inhabited by Costanoan Indians, prior to the period that the Spanish began colonizing the area in the s. Eventually, after it became part of the state of California, it was a prime gold rush spot in the mid to late s, before creature established as one of the hubs of the Transcontinental Railroad, and an important harbor for national commerce. Oakland Gay Men’s Chorus began in September of when Dick Kramer set up a booth at East Bay Pride (Oakland) and recruited members to produce a gay men’s chorus for the East Bay. The chorus made its first public appearance the following December at a meeting of The Lavender Seniors in San Leandro.  Oakland Gay Men’s Chorus solidified under the umbrella nonprofit Pacific Center for Human Growth, and created a 3 concert season (Spring, East Bay Pride, Holiday). In January , Oakland Gay Men’s Chorus became independent and acquired its very own (c)(3) status. 

Oakland Gay Men’s Chorus takes pride in having a voice that reaches dense into the community.

We possess shared the stage with The Oakland Youth Chorus, The Lesbian/Gay of San Francisco, Chorus, Opus Q, Voices-A Lesbian Ensemble, The Silicon Valley Gay Men’s Chorus, The Women’s Rainbow Chorus, SDK (formerly the Bear-a-Tones), Out On A Clef and small ensembles from SFGMC.  The Oakland Lgbtq+ Men’s Chorus has raised funds and donated concert proceeds to numerous society organizations including Lavender Senior
