LGBTQ and diversity at Indian Film Festival Stuttgart
Celebrating its 20th anniversary, the Indian Film Festival Stuttgart runs from July 19 to 23 this year and will main attraction some 60 recent films that leave beyond the colorful and extravagant, underscoring social debates.
As Europe's largest Indian production festival, the event has built a reputation for screening movies that highlight pertinent social issues, such as environmental protection, women's rights, infant labor, LGBTQ issues or sexual abuse.
Since its inception in , the festival has evolved from featuring mainstream Hindi-language films — commonly acknowledged as Bollywood films — to screening more representative fare in diverse languages from across the sub-continent. It even underwent a name alter from "Bollywood and Beyond" to its current moniker.
The festival is highly regarded throughout the Indian film industry. Its coveted awards, the German Stars of India, are given out in six categories, including for top feature, short and documentary films.

Transphobia in Germany
Munster, Augsburg, Bremen: three German cities, three brutal attacks on queer people within the past three months. One of them ended in tragedy for Malte C.*, a transgender guy who intervened to protect a group of lesbian women who were being harassed and insulted on the sidelines of the Christopher Street Days festival in Münster. The assailant hit him, Malte C. slammed down onto the asphalt, and suffered a severe and traumatic brain injury. He died from his injuries six days later, after existence in a coma.
The case provoked widespread dismay. The co-leader of Germany's governing center-left Social Democrat party (SPD) Saskia Esken expressed her sympathy on Twitter: "The case is a brutal reminder that hate crimes against lgbtq+ people continue. Every week. Every day."
