Calgary born-and-raised player Samer Salem is in for quite a ride. He recently returned to Canada to unite the cast of the hit police procedural drama TV show, Allegiance – CBC’s most-watched new TV series of the –24 season. While the queer Canadian has found success with supporting or recurring roles on television in The Handmaid’s TaleThe BoysYellowjackets and The Expanse, and on the big screen in the much-hyped queer rom-com My Artificial Boyfriend, his starring role as Detective Corporal Zak Kalaini will turn him into one of Canada’s most noticeable faces.

More than your typical cop show, Allegiance aims to complicate mainstream police show narratives by offering a more nuanced perspective in how it approaches topical issues like safe su

Fast forward to now: Salem gets to fall in love with a man on screen. He plays Rafi, a confident and romantic chef who captures the attention of Keiynan Lonsdale's Andrew in BuzzFeed Studios' new rom-com My Fake Boyfriend. Salem's instinctive warmth and lightheartedness translate beautifully on screen, and it's simple to see how Andrew, or anyone, could fall in desire with him after taking just one cooking class.

Flirting in a lighthearted comedy was a modern experience for the actor. Prime Video audiences already know Salem as Josep, part of the #PolyAmBelterFam, a pirate family in the cult sci-fi hit The Expanse. "When I read the breakdown that they were this polyamorous family, I was favor, fuck yes," he says of landing the role. "Let's normalize it!"

Last year, he filmed a two episode arc on The Handmaid's Tale. "Working with someone like Elisabeth Moss, that was a big deal to me. For [MyFake Boyfriend], I was nervous in a different way. It was something I hadn't done before, so I was getting my sea legs."

The film schedule for the film forced him to jump right into the d

On Valentine’s Day, who doesn’t want to cuddle up with a partner and some popcorn for a romantic film?

For comedy and romance, last year’s charming “Fire Island,” (on Hulu) puts a queer twist on Jane Austen’s “Pride and Prejudice,” as Noah (Joel Kim Booster, who penned the screenplay) unexpectedly falls for Will (Conrad Ricamora) during his week summering in the queer mecca. Watching them trying not to couple up is highly satisfying.

Writer/director Ray Yeung’s fabulous “Front Cover,” (on Netflix) hasRyan (Jake Choi), a gay, American-born Chinese fashion stylist, assigned to work with Ning (James Chen) a Chinese actor promoting his recent film in New York. The two men are “like fire and water,” with Ning telling Ryan, “Not to show his homo side.” Of course, as the guys increase closer, an attraction develops between them that changes both of their perspectives on sexuality and ethnicity.

Anotheramusing romcom is gay writer/director Mike Mosallam’s fabulous “Breaking Fast” (Hulu). Mo (the charismatic Haaz Sleiman) is a heartbroken gay Muslim doctor who meets Kal (Micha
