Greetings, fellow Earthlings! Welcome back to this flavorful quadrant of the Internet-verse, The Unicorn Scale. Why am I writing so stylishly and fully of celestially colorful language, one may ask? Because this edition of TUS focuses on the Star Trek parody display, The Orville , a new comedy series on Fox headed by Family Guy &#;s Seth MacFarlane. So arrange phasers to gay, because we&#;re about to go where few sci-fi comedies have gone before.
WARNING : Hey, I&#;m nothing if not consistent with these reviews. And that includes my option to include plot details in my examination of bi themes I survey in this small corner. So: spoilers ahoy for the series — specifically for the ninth episode of the first season, Cupid&#;s Dagger . The Orville centers on the crew of the eponymous starship, headed by Captain Ed Mercer (MacFarlane) and his first commander — who just so happens to be his cheating ex-wife,
Family Guy and The Cleveland Show author Seth MacFarlane is responsible for some of the worst transgender representation on TV, and he&#;s up to his old tricks on his new sci-fi comedy, The Orville. In the third episode, &#;About a Girl,&#; MacFarlane introduces a baby born to an all-male species of aliens that has the &#;wrong genitals&#; at birth; the episode revolves around the fight the parents contain with the ship&#;s human crew, including the captain and medic, to give the newborn surgery to &#;fix the problem&#; and &#;make the baby male.&#; It presents that idea that gender and sex are binary in humans and, in fact, universally binary in all species in every universe even in the distant future. MacFarlane seems to think he&#;s making a evolving point about gender, but it&#;s really another huge miss for him.
In the galaxy where The Orville takes place, there seems to be a universal concept of sexual dimorphism, where every species has the stereotype that males are bigger and stronger and females are smaller and weaker. This isn&#;t even true of most species on earth.
Roger Smith
Roger Smith (Seth MacFarlane) is a centuries-old alien living with the Smith family in the animated sitcom American Dad! (–). Having lived on Ground since crashing in Roswell, New Mexico in , Roger came to reside with the Smiths after rescuing main character Stan Smith at Area 51 four years before the show takes place.
Roger began the series as a sensitive pushover who is often taken advantage of and ridiculed. Over period, his character has grow a sociopath, exhibiting increasingly cruel, selfish, devious, and depraved behavior, although the Smith family, with the exception of Stan, are curiously oblivious to his nature despite being his most frequent victims.
In adv episodes of the reveal, Roger is confined to the Smith house to conceal the fact that he’s an alien. This restriction is soon abandoned and Roger begins adopting disguises and fictitious personas in order to hold a life outside the house. These personas hold become a major plot device , with Roger’s myriad alter egos frequently facilitating the main storyline of episodes.
